Boxford Farms has been growing fruit on the Suffolk and Essex border for over 75 years. As a family-run business in its third generation, we strive to grow fruit of the highest quality using world-class techniques to ensure that we are a sustainable business for future generations. Today and tomorrow.
By buying and eating British you support your local farmer, the UK economy and the farming industry. For the last forty years, British farming has led the world in environmentally and ethically sustainable growing and farming practices and food quality assurance standards. The British countryside has been shaped for thousands of years by agriculture and horticulture and supports many rural jobs across the country, so farming, therefore, remains a vital part of the economy and society as a whole.
Welcome to the future! Our focus on innovation has meant the adoption of new and exciting ways of tackling maximum production with minimum waste. Our on-farm AD plant produces 750kwh of electricity and 750kW of heat – we’re turning maize, out-graded fruit and apple pomace into energy, powering our cold stores and farm buildings, whilst drying applewood to be sold as logs or other wood to be used to heat either the hotel or glasshouse in our 6 biomass boilers. Our Bi-baum™ twin-stem trees offer us a more reliable, cost-effective way of growing fruit, and our hail nets, rain-covers and poly-tunnels guarantee that the crop is picked and not wasted.
In short: yields up, green energy used, waste down, farm traffic reduced on local roads. And we’re striving towards bigger, better green targets every year.
We’ve been voted number one – and we plan to stay there! We aim to be a world-class producer of fruit through our long-term investments, growing techniques, environmental credentials and sustainable production, our valued team, and consumer awareness. With these core aspirations, our farm continues to grow and flourish year on year. Our sites in the beautiful Dedham Vale and Stour Valley allow us to grow on north and south-facing slopes, making the most of the earliest seasonal sunlight, whilst at the same time delaying where necessary for late production. East Anglia’s dry and temperate climate allows us to guarantee the best results from our produce.
At Boxford Farms we strive to succeed and innovate, and this innovation and success has been noted by respected awarding bodies. Some of our achievements include winning the Best Green Enterprise 2016 BALE award, being Highly Commended for the Greenest Farming Business at the 2016 Suffolk Greenest County awards, and winning Top Fruit Grower of the Year at the national 2015 UK Grower Awards.
